The simple pleasures of life

“A five-year-old child is a being who gets almost as much fun out of a fifty-six dollar set of swings as it does out of finding a small green worm.” -Bill Vaughn

Happy 4th of July everyone!

Had a wonderful relaxing 4th of July long weekend... cought up on sleep, an evening outdoors, shopping, fireworks, and a beach outing with extended family. Had a blast...

This time last year, we were in Canada visiting extended family... oh what a trip it was...

First we missed our flight (we didn't know Rithik needed a
seperate boarding pass and the airline took forever to issue one)... then we were stranded on the airport for hours... and finally when we got on the plane and reached our destination, all of our luggage was lost... we got it 2 days later finally... oh and did I mention there was an ongoing strike of garbage people in Toronto...

But apart from the initial troubles, it was one of the best vacations we had. Seeing family is always great and Reya and Rithik were fully pampered by everyone.

We visited so many places in Toronto and Ottawa... Niagra Falls, C.N. Towers, Museums, Arboratum (Experimental Farm), Rideau Canal, Byward market... too many to count... At every place, We tried that Reya was exposed to something new, or learnt about something...  We showed her diff flowers at farm, told about the ocean and lakes at Niagra fall, told her about "Canada Day"... basically we hoped that Reya had a good time... and that she experienced the things she had heard from us. After all as Samuel Johnson said, “The use of traveling is to regulate imagination by reality, and instead of thinking how things may be, to see them as they are.”

After a fun filled week, we came back very tired but very happy... Reya couldn't wait to tell her teachers and friends about the trip. I took her to school in the morning and she ran to her teacher, Miss Abby and started telling her about the trip....

Reya: Miss Abby, We went to Canada... we saw this... we did that... we ate that... blah blah blah :-)
Miss Abby: Wow! Sounds like a fun trip... What was the best part of the vacation?
...
Reya thought for a minute...
...
I thought for a minute... may be she will say Niagra falls, or may be C. N. Towers, or may be she will say that meeting family was the best part... oh! the milk farm where the cow chewed her dress...oh what will say...

Reya made up her mind... she smiled brightly and said "The very best part of the vacation was pressing the  buttons in all the elevators..."

Wish we knew that before we spent on the whole trip... I could have just taken her to my office and let her travel in the elevator all day. :-)

Signing off,
Shilpa
